Running a Business in the Age of Telecommunication Jan. 18, 2006

Telecommunication is a fancy term for any kind of communication that occurs over a distance using an device such as a radio, a telephone, a telegraph, a television, computers, and data communications.

Telephones have become a critical part of today's business world. It has allowed for high amounts of information transfer at relatively low costs. However, this type of communication is rapidly being replaced by data transmissions. In fact, internet companies are now beginning to take their piece of the telecommunication marketplace using not just the computer, but the telephone too. With voice over the internet technologies growing in popularity and reliability, while their prices drop, they are becoming a serious option for many businesses.

This is especially true among smaller businesses who are looking to cut costs at every level. If your small business uses the telephone a lot, especially to make long distance calls, then you'll want to take a good look at what IP technology has to offer you over the telephone.

Though there is still a question of sound quality - many complain that the line will, on occasion, sound about the same as a cellular phone call - this is being improved with every passing day, making it a viable option for many businesses who already have internet and can create a very cost effective bundle from their internet provider for providing the phone service as well.

This technology is not yet available in every region, so if you want to take advantage of this service, you will first want to look into what's available within your region. Assuming that you are in a serviced location, you should then comparison shop among the different carriers. Though your IP provider may offer you a good deal, don't just sign on without looking into other companies that might be able to show you something even better.

Finally, even if you do have voice over internet phone, you will still want to keep a basic standard phone line in service. This makes local calling much more pleasant, and is very important in times of emergency, such as power failure or lightning strikes. The reliability of conventional telephones is still better, so it is a security measure to maintain at least one basic telephone line. Otherwise, with VOIP, the savings are all yours.
